Ask McFartnuggets: “Why Did the Public Need to Know Details of Robin Williams’ Suicide?”

The truth may hurt, but it
hurts a lot less than lies.
Dear McFartnuggets:
I can’t believe the police involved in the investigation of Robin Williams’ suicide gave away so much information to the public and the media. I was outraged to hear the gory details about the death of this amazing actor and legend. Why did this need to be said? Why didn’t they give the family some privacy on this? Why did we need to know he was sitting with a belt around his neck with one end wedged in a closet? -- Lauren from Pensacola, Florida

Dear Lauren:
It would be ideal to give Robin Williams’ family as much privacy as possible, however you have to keep in mind that before any details were known, the cause of death was reported as asphyxiation. When people these days hear “asphyxiation” they picture someone like David Carradine with a rope around their neck, naked in a closet masturbating. Once that’s been announced as the cause of death and the police know that he did not die through autoerotic asphyxiation, it’s best to announce what the truth: he was sitting down and fully clothed. Sadly, these are important details to protect the legacy of Robin Williams and keep speculation from running rampant. I guarantee that if they had not announced the details, you’d have a large number of people assuming he died attempting autoerotic asphyxiation. People would assume that’s why the details were not being disclosed. So as strange as it seems, releasing the details was the right thing to do for Robin Williams and his family to show that he died in a somewhat dignified way. If you really want Robin Williams to rest in peace it’s best for people to know the truth so they don’t create wild stories about what might have happened.
