Ask McFartnuggets: “Why is Peter Pan Always Played By a Woman?”

The sexual tension between
Peter and Captain Hook is
always palpable.
Dear McFartnuggets:
How come whenever there’s a production of Peter Pan on Broadway a woman always plays Peter Pan? The character is supposed to be a young boy. I find it offensive that they’re basically saying a grown ass woman is equivalent to a child boy. To me that’s very sexist and I can’t believe they get away with this horse plop. What the hell are people supposed to think? Are women and boys really that similar? If so I don’t see why Catholic priests get into so much trouble. They should just go for short haired women if that’s the case. Sure that’s still against their beliefs, but at least it’s better than messing with kids! Are the people who put these productions together just perverts who want to see a female Peter Pan make out with Wendy? -- Yolanda from St. Louis, Missouri

Dear Steve:
It’s really less a matter of a woman being similar to boys and more about the lack of quality child actors there are. I’m sure they would like a real boy to play Peter Pan, but kid actors tend to be terrible. Instead they cast “grown ass women” who have young looking faces and give them a lesbian haircut so yeah they sort of look like a boy. Still they can’t ever make them completely like a boy so people have to suspend that disbelief. Everyone knows it’s a woman playing Peter Pan, it’s not an ideal casting move, they’re just making the best of a bad situation.
