Henry Ford once said “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” That’s a nice inspiring quote, but of course it’s complete bullshit. The fact of the matter is, what you think is irrelevant in most cases. A guy who escapes his room at the hospital and jumps off the roof might THINK he can fly, but the autopsy report would prove otherwise. You can THINK you can’t beat your heroin addiction, but you really can. What people think really doesn’t matter, it’s what people are actually capable that makes the difference. The problem with this saying is that it’s too definite in saying “You’re right!” Maybe thinking a certain way helps one way or another, but it certainly doesn’t decide the outcome. This quote would be vastly improved by adding two words: “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re quite possibly right.” I wouldn’t even say “probably right” because that would be a lie too.
