Dear McFartnuggets:
How come 999 out of 1,000 times when someone’s criticizing another person it turns out they’re usually not a talented person? Like if you’re going to criticize and complain about a job someone is doing you should be able to do a better job than them. It’s like someone without arms criticizing another person’s driving ability or a film critic who isn’t an actor criticizing an actor. Why would you do that? If you don’t have the ability to do something better than the person you’re criticizing then shouldn’t you just shut up or be busy doing it better and living your own life? -- Nancy from Grand Rapids, Michigan
Dear Nancy:
Well, here’s the thing, people have the right to criticize. It’s up to the person being criticized to judge what weight that criticism has. Now if you’re being criticized by someone talented and respected then you’re going to take that criticism seriously and use it constructively. If you’re being criticized by some random person who’s making judgements because they’re bored and have nothing else to do then you can’t take that seriously. It’s not a big deal. There shouldn’t be any hard feelings about that. Not everyone can be a talented person so the people who aren’t skilled in anything have to spend their time watching the ones who are talented whether it be sports stars, actors, or artists. When you’re spending your time watching others you tend to develop opinions and you want to share them because to you, your opinions matter. It’s a normal human reaction to criticize things. Talented people have criticisms of people and things, but they usually have better things to do than air out their complaints all the time. Film critics are generally not actors as you mentioned, nor are they usually directors, but they make a living judging people who are doing things they can’t do. Normally that’s not acceptable, but there are certain fields where people can make a career doing that and more power to them. Their skill is criticizing so maybe they’re not as talentless as you think!
You can walk on water and some people are still gonna hate. |
