The menu of the future. |
With the need for renewable food sources higher than ever, it’s only a matter of time before humanity as a whole begins eating insects. As of today there are an estimated 10 quintillion individual insects on this planet, the number of livestock animals is somewhere in the billions. There are so many different insects to taste and enjoy, however there are some that are a little difficult to eat. Here are the top 5 insects you’re going to want to try and avoid eating at insect restaurants in the future:
5. Cockroach
Cockroaches are definitely an acquired taste and their numbers encourage us to eat as many as we can. They are never in any real danger of being extinct so you’d think cockroaches would be the number one insect to eat. The problem arises in their cleanliness. They’re always oily and crawling around subways and sewers. Plus when you bite into them you get a creamy bitter goo exploding in your mouth and that’s never a good thing.
Cockroaches leave chemical trails in their feces that transmit bacteria. |
4. Wasps
Wasps are one of the most hated insects because all they really do is sting people viciously. So you’d think that eating wasps would be a great revenge and we could help limit their population by turning them into snacks. The problem is they have a very odd, crunchy texture and taste like absolute crap. Also, a lot of wasps are predators of spiders so if you’re scared of eating spiders you should be doubly scared of wasps.
Usually you should avoid blue colored food. |
3. Stink beetles
This is pretty self explanatory. Stink beetles were basically designed by nature to not be eaten. You can tell when the burst of ass juice coats your entire mouth and you begin vomiting violently. Plus, the crunchy exoskeleton is typically indigestible so you don’t get much nutrition from that.
Unless you like really funky foods you should avoid stink bugs and stink beetles. |
2. Giant African land snails
Because snails and slugs are mollusks like oysters and other shellfish, you have to watch out for parasites. Always cook your Giant African land snails very well. Otherwise you risk contracting Angiostrongyliasis, a nematode infection that can cause fatal meningitis.
It looks like roast beef, but it doesn't taste like roast beef. |
And the number one worst insect to eat is...
1. Puss caterpillar
The worst insect to eat is the larvae of the Megalopyge opercularis moth known as the Puss caterpillar. First off, it’s covered in fur so it’s like putting a damn hamster in your mouth. Second, the fur is covered in venomous spines which cause burning, swelling, nausea, and difficulty breathing among other horrible effects. That’s just if you touch it. Imagine the damage this sucker would do to your mouth, tongue, esophagus, and intestinal tract!
It's like eating a Koosh ball that can kill you. |
