You could land among the stars OR you could explode. |
Sometimes people tell you “Shoot for the moon because even if you miss you’ll land among the stars.” This is meant to be an inspirational quote, but it’s very far off-base and has no real root in reality. Here are the major things wrong with this saying:
1. No one shoots for the Moon anymore.
We’ve been there, it’s boring. If you miss you’ll land among the stars, but what if you make it? You’ll just smash into the Moon and be stranded on its surface until you die. Nothing exciting is going to happen up there, fool.
2. Do you know how far you have to miss to be aiming for the Moon and end up among other solar systems’ stars?
That’s an absurd failure. No good could come from missing by that much. I don’t care what you’re aiming for, if you miss by light years, you messed up and you can talk all you want about “stars” that’s not going to make things better.
3. You can’t land among stars.
You’ll continue to float in the lifeless vacuum of space. You will die a horrible death doing this. Even if you got close to the stars, they’re really hot so you’d be incinerated by the heat. That sounds like lots of fun...
The next time you tell someone to shoot for the moon so they land among the stars, think about what you’re actually saying and then instead say something a little less scientifically bizarre like “Follow your dreams.”
