Ask McFartnuggets: “What is The Winnie in Winnie-the-Pooh Short For?”

Yeah the real Winnie was
Black. Can you deal with
that?
Dear McFartnuggets:
What is the name “Winnie” in “Winnie The Pooh” short for? Is it Winifred? Is this playa actually named Winifred The Pooh? That’s some ridiculous shit! How you got a girl’s name being you a male bear? I mean granted you ain’t got no visible genitalia, but come on ya’ll that’s just inadmissible! -- Dyquan from Cleveland, Ohio

Dear Dyquan:
The creator of Winnie-the-Pooh, A.A. Milne named the character after a teddy bear his son Christopher had. His son’s teddy bear was named “Winnie” and that teddy bear was named after a real life Canadian Black Bear named “Winnie” from the London Zoo. That bear’s unabridged name was “Winnipeg” named after Winnipeg, Manitoba since it was a Canadian bear. So no, it’s not Winifred-the-Pooh. Thanks for the question...
