Stupid Awareness Ribbon Bullshit

Raising awareness for illnesses and cancers is great, but I think the colored ribbon system needs to be overhauled. Every cause wants a ribbon, but people are always so unoriginal with their color choice so a blue ribbon ends up representing a dozen different conditions which totally defeats the purpose. At what point will red or blue represent hundreds of different things? Wouldn't it be easier to just use a giant ribbon with every color to raise awareness for EVERYTHING? Of course that would be pointless and dilute all the meaning so even two illnesses sharing the same color dilutes the awareness created. It's getting completely out of hand. Here are all the things a Purple ribbon signifies:

  • Suicide Prevention
  • General Cancer
  • Testicular Cancer
  • Animal Cruelty/Animal Welfare
  • Crohn's and Colitis
  • Domestic Violence
  • Drug Overdose
  • Migraine
  • Spirit Day and victims of homophobia
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Lupus
  • Arnold Chiari Malformation
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Pagan Pride
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Childhood Hemiplegia and stroke
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Alzheimer's Disease
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Workers' Memorial Day
  • March of Dimes
  • Hidradenitis Suppurativa
  • Orca Whale Awareness
  • Child Neglect

Okay so apparently everyone likes purple. How about we let the top two or three most damaging things on this list keep purple and everyone else has to pick another color? (I'm looking at you ORCAS!) Actually it's probably easier if we just let Prince decide which causes deserve to keep purple. Sure there aren't infinite colors out there, but there are enough shades and combinations that this type of shit should not be happening. It's indicative of a lack of imagination and creativity on the parts of these awareness movements. Obviously if you're trying to raise awareness for a cause these days when people are being bombarded by distractions nonstop you're gonna need to exhibit a little more creativity than just PURPLE.
