Ask McFartnuggets: “Why Do Golf Announcers Talk So Low?”

Doctors recommend watching
7 to 8 hours of golf a night.
Dear McFartnuggets:
Why do golf announcers always talk so low and soft? I don’t get it. It’s not like they’re anywhere near the golfers so if they talked at a normal volume or even louder it wouldn’t affect the game. If anything it would make golf a little less unwatchable. Commentary can add a lot to a sport and boring or quiet commentary can detract a lot. Why do they talk so damn low? -- Lily from Annapolis, Maryland

Dear Lily:
I think the reason they talk so softly is because they don’t want to wake up the people at home. Golf is a very mellow, slow paced, relaxing game so it’s not out of the question to have viewers fall asleep during the tournament. If they talked too loud they would irritate their target audience of elderly people and that would be bad. You never want to alienate your base like that. By talking louder they might also risk waking up people who had fallen asleep before the golf competition started. Most golf tournaments happen on Sundays so it’s not uncommon for people to pass out in front of the TV and if they were woken up and saw golf they’d immediately change the channel. Maybe in a few years when most of the current golf fans die of natural causes the PGA will be forced to spice things up to target the youth market, but til then golf announcers will continue to whisper.
