Dear McFartnuggets:
Why are there no reality shows starring smart people? You would think that people would be more interested in watching the lives of intelligent people like mathematicians and scientists. I wouldn’t mind seeing a reality show starring the Obamas. Why don’t reality shows ever follow the people whose lives actually matter and make a difference? -- Ophelia from Hartford, Connecticut
Dear Ophelia:
There are two major reasons you don’t see more people featured in reality shows. Firstly, dumb people are more fun to watch. People tend to watch reality shows so they can laugh at how dumb the people on the show are, meanwhile they’re wasting their own lives watching other people live theirs which is arguably not very intelligent. What can I say? People enjoy irony. The other reason is that people who are smart and of consequence to society are generally too busy doing important things to have a camera in their face all day. That’s the reason you won’t see a reality show starring the President of the United States or their family (at least for a few years) aside from security reasons. People who are busy trying to cure cancer simply don’t have the time to sit down and record those bits where they talk to the camera about shit they already did in the present tense so the viewer can get their opinion on things they’re seeing at the moment. Those are pretty much the main two reasons why you don’t see more Nobel Prize winners on E! or Bravo.
Smart people tend to avoid conflict, so that's boring. |
